When the Ref Sent Off the Wrong Player

One of the funniest and most embarrassing refereeing mistakes in Premier League history happened on March 22, 2014, during a heated clash between Chelsea and Arsenal at Stamford Bridge. The match whose Final Score was Chelsea 6-0 Arsenal on Arsรจne Wenger’s 1,000th match as Arsenal manager was officiated by referee Andre Marriner

What Happened?

๐Ÿ”น Chelsea was already leading 2-0 when Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain made a goal-line handball to block a shot from Eden Hazard inside the penalty area.

๐Ÿ”น It was a clear penalty, and the referee had to send off the guilty player.

๐Ÿ”น The problem? Marriner didn’t send off Oxlade-Chamberlain… he sent off Kieran Gibbs, who was standing nearby and had nothing to do with the incident! ๐Ÿคฆ‍♂️

The Chaos That Followed

He walked toward Marriner looking puzzled, saying: “Wait… What? Me??”

Even Oxlade-Chamberlain tried to tell the referee, saying “It was me! I handled the ball!”

Marriner ignored everyone and insisted that Gibbs leave the pitch.

๐Ÿ”น The Chelsea players looked amused, while Arsenal players couldn’t believe what was happening.

๐Ÿ”น Oxlade-Chamberlain, despite admitting his guilt, did not get punished at all!

๐Ÿ”น Hazard scored the penalty, and Chelsea went on to destroy Arsenal 6-0, making Wenger’s 1,000th match a disaster.

Aftermath & Reactions

๐Ÿ”น The FA later overturned Gibbs’ red card and transferred it to Oxlade-Chamberlain.

๐Ÿ”น Andre Marriner apologized but faced huge criticism for such a ridiculous mistake.

๐Ÿ”น Social media exploded with memes and jokes, comparing Marriner’s decision to:

  • Police arresting the wrong suspect. ๐Ÿš”
  • Sending off Ronaldo when Messi dives. ๐Ÿ˜‚

๐Ÿ”น Wenger described it as one of the worst refereeing errors he had ever seen.

The Legacy of the ‘Invisible’ Red Card

✔ To this day, it remains one of the funniest red card mix-ups in football history.

✔ It became a meme for mistaken identity in football.

✔ Andre Marriner continued refereeing but is still remembered for this bizarre mistake

Lee Dixon’s Long-Range Disaster (1991) Arsenal legend Lee Dixon had a solid reputation as a defender, but one moment in a match against Coventry Ci...
